More Marketers Flee from TLC's All-American Muslim

All-American Muslim Travel search aggregating site Kayak.com will discontinue advertising on TLC's series All-American Muslim. Kayak.com introduced Tuesday that it wouldn't continue running advertisements throughout the show if this returns in The month of january, taking problem with how TLC presented this content from the series, which opened in November and follows the lives of 5 Lebanese American Muslim families in Dearborn, Michigan, the biggest Muslim community within the U . s . States. Lowe's Do It Yourself lately received fire after it drawn advertising in the show. The house-improvement chain withdrew its spots following the Florida Family Association, a conservative group, protested the program was "propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda's obvious and offer danger to American protections and traditional values." Should Lowe's have drawn advertisements all-American Muslim? Kayak chief marketing officer Robert Birge required to his company's How do people explain why he was stopping the partnership with all of-American Muslim -- and why the FFA had nothing related to it. "The very first factor I came across was that TLC wasn't upfront around concerning the character of the show. When I stated, it is a worthy subject, but any reasonable person knows this subject is really a particular lightning fishing rod. We feel TLC went of the method to choose a fight about this, plus they did not tell us their intentions. That isn't a company practice that generally will get repeat business from us. I additionally think that it did this subject a grave injustice. Sadly, TLC has become taking pleasure in the interest out of this debate." He ongoing: "We've made a decision to not give TLC more income once the show returns in The month of january. Regrettably, this decision results in as bending to bigotry. Additionally, it seems that people didn't support individuals who deserve support as people so that as People in america. For your, I'm profoundly sorry. I ought to have conveyed more clearly. We don't want anybody to consider that people caved to hate. If only I possibly could share a few of the emails I have received from your team. The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

Rooney Mara stars in David Fincher's adaptation of 'The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.'Co-starring Daniel Craig and Christopher Plummer, 'Dragon Tattoo' is based on Stieg Larsson's bestselling novel.A Sony Pictures Entertainment release of a Columbia Pictures and MGM presentation of a Scott Rudin/Yellow Bird production. Produced by Scott Rudin, Ole Sondberg, Soren Staermose, Cean Chaffin. Executive producers, Zaillian, Mikael Wallen, Anni Faurbye Fernandez. Co-producers, Berna Levin, Eli Bush. Directed by David Fincher. Screenplay, Steven Zaillian, based on the book by Stieg Larsson, originally published by Norstedts.Mikael Blomkvist - Daniel Craig Lisbeth Salander - Rooney Mara Henrik Vanger - Christopher Plummer Martin Vanger - Stellan Skarsgard Frode - Steven Berkoff Erika Berger - Robin Wright Bjurman - Yorick van Wageningen Anita Vanger - Joely Richardson Cecilia - Geraldine James Armansky - Goran Visnjic Det. Morell - Donald Sumpter Wennerstrom - Ulf FribergIf ever an atmosphere could be described as dank, fetid yet strangely luxurious, it's the chill seeping through every corrosively beautiful frame of "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo." As classy a film as could be made from Stieg Larsson's sordid page-turner, David Fincher's much-anticipated return to serial-killer territory is a fastidiously grim pulp entertainment that plays like a first-class train ride through progressively bleaker circles of hell. If the brooding intelligence and technical mastery on display at times feel disproportionate to the material, Rooney Mara's riveting take on Lisbeth Salander amply validates what will likely be Fincher's biggest success to date. The global popularity of Larsson's posthumously published "Millennium" trilogy should help the Sony release overcome a number of commercial hurdles, including a no-bull R rating, scenes of implied sexual assault, and a pacey but unhurried 158-minute running time. That this English-lingo adaptation is arriving not long after a widely seen Swedish version (which grossed $104 million worldwide and an impressive $10 million in the U.S. last year) could hinder its international prospects to some degree, but all in all, the desire to see what Hollywood has wrought from Larsson's literary juggernaut should entice franchise addicts, casual fans and mildly curious holdouts. What they're in for is a considerably slicker and more sophisticated piece of film craft than the Swedish production or either of its Nordic TV sequels. The film telegraphs its exceptional production values and acrid tone with one of Fincher's typically arresting credits sequences: a rapid-fire frenzy of images variously evoking sex, violence, birth, technology and immolation, set to a furious cover of Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song" featuring Karen O. It's presumably a howl of rage from the ravaged psyche of Lisbeth Salander (Mara), the dragon-tattooed Goth girl whose black mohawk, bondage gear and don't-mess-with-me attitude conceal a troubled history as well as one of Sweden's great investigative minds. Hewing more faithfully to the novel than its predecessor did, Steven Zaillian's smartly pruned screenplay divides its time between Salander, a supremely gifted hacker and professional snoop, and the most recent subject of one of her expert background checks, Stockholm-based magazine journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig). Publicly disgraced after losing a high-profile libel case rigged by a corrupt mogul (Ulf Friberg), Blomkvist takes a powder and relocates on a whim to the remote Hedeby Island; there, Henrik Vanger (Christopher Plummer), aging patriarch of the wealthy, notoriously fractious Vanger family, has assigned him to find out what happened to Henrik's niece Harriet, who, as depicted in gorgeously hued flashbacks, mysteriously disappeared from the island more than 40 years ago. Blomkvist eventually unmasks not just a killer but a highly disturbing record of generational sin etched in the Vanger dynasty's DNA and, by extension, the fabric of any Western capitalist society. Without excessively underlining the subtext, the film fully retains Larsson's thinly veiled indictment of corporate skulduggery, anti-Semitism, child abuse and, above all, unspeakably sadistic crimes against women (not for nothing was the novel published in Sweden under the title "Men Who Hate Women"). Fittingly, it's Salander who serves as not only a victim of such violence, but an avenging dark angel. To that end, editors Kirk Baxter and Angus Wall crosscut frequently between Blomkvist's investigation and a disturbing parallel narrative in which Salander, a ward of the state, must deal with a predatory legal advocate (Yorick van Wageningen). As with the Swedish pic, the scenes in which this sadist abuses his authority will prove the most difficult to watch, although here the degradation is more implied than seen, shot dimly and from a well-judged distance, with no hint of leering or exploitation beyond the calculated satisfaction of watching Salander turn the tables. Blomkvist eventually hires Salander as a research assistant, initiating a collaboration that sets off professional and romantic sparks and brings the investigation to a boil. As the two use the latest technology to resurrect old files, photos and clippings, their MacBooks commanding nearly as much screentime as their faces, Fincher charts their progress with unerring focus and agility; instinctively, one detects reverberations of the helmer's past work, notably the razor-sharp techno-savvy of "The Social Network" and the procedural rigor of "Zodiac." Yet where the obsessive quest for knowledge in that 2007 film was predicated on the unknowability of the truth, "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" is finally let down by a yarn that contents itself with easy solutions and few lingering mysteries. For all the fetishistic attention Fincher and his crew lavish on every gruesome forensic detail, they're unable to transmute Larsson's rudimentary mystery plotting into something more than pop-lit fare. What remains, then, is the hypnotic presence of Mara, who fearlessly steps into a role made iconic by Swedish thesp Noomi Rapace and proves more than equal to the challenge. Whereas Rapace emphasized the character's pluck and rage, the more petite, vulnerable-looking Mara presents Salander as an emptied-out enigma: Pierced to the nines, her eyebrows dyed a pale skin tone so as to drain any readable emotion from her face, she frequently averts her gaze downward from whomever she may be addressing. It's a gesture at once defensive and defiant, bespeaking years of endured abuse and alienation, yet despite her blank affect, the actress charges every moment with tension and feeling. Though he's a more compelling Blomkvist than Swedish originator Michael Nyqvist, Craig still makes sure to present the character as a bit of a schlump, tamping down his leading-man charisma to allow Mara to decisively claim the spotlight. The duo's often darkly funny rapport pays off with startling emotion in the final reels, perhaps the most gratifying surprise from a filmmaker whose temperament has generally been as frigid as the film's Swedish landscapes. Casting elsewhere is perfect down to the smallest roles, particularly Robin Wright as Blomkvist's gorgeous editor/lover; Stellan Skarsgard as Harriet's genial brother, Martin; and, despite the excision of much of her material from the novel, Geraldine James as Henrik's inquisitive grandniece, Cecilia. The slight variability of the ensemble's Swedish accents (Craig retains his British enunciation) is a minor but not bothersome flaw. With the outstanding assistance of d.p. Jeff Cronenweth and production designer Donald Graham Burt, Fincher has rendered a gray, vividly creepy world in keeping with Larsson's cynical vision; spanning glassy modern offices and moneyed estates as well as squalid flats and rustic cottages, it's a place where evil hides in plain sight, and even a well-appointed apartment or an island getaway can turn out to be a sicko's torture chamber. At times carrying echoes of their work on "Social Network," Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross' score blends dread with driving momentum, establishing a richly unsettling mood with recurring dissonances, eerie wind chimes and pulsating reverb effects.Camera (Deluxe color, widescreen), Jeff Cronenweth; editors, Kirk Baxter, Angus Wall; music, Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross; production designer, Donald Graham Burt; supervising art director, Mikael Varhelyi; art directors, Frida Arvidsson, Kajsa Severin, Pernilla Olsson; set decorator, Linda Janson; costume designer, Trish Summerville; sound (Dolby Digital/SDDS/Datasat), Bo Persson; re-recording mixers, David Parker, Michael Semanick, Klyce; sound designer, Ren Klyce; visual effects supervisor, Eric Barba; visual effects, Digital Domain; additional visual effects, the Third & the Seventh, Proebius, Savage Visual Effects, Method Studios, Ollin VFX, A52, Eden FX, Colorworks; stunt coordinators, Kimmo Rajala, Ben Cooke; line producer, Malte Forssell; assistant director, Bob Wagner; casting, Laray Mayfield. PHOTOS: Hollywood's Twitter Feuds That may come as a surprise since the hourlong drama, returning for the second half of its sophomore season in January, has hovered around the 3 million viewers mark thus far this season -- just a small percentage of the audience that tunes in to CBS juggernaut Two and a Half Men, which came in No. 2 this year with the help of Charlie Sheen's high-profile ouster and the casting of heavy Twitter user Ashton Kutcher. It's no surprise then that Sheen was Twitter's most-talked about actor for the year; Kutcher was eighth. Ricky Gervais was No. 4 following his controversial Golden Globes hosting stint at the beginning of the year and Tracy Morgan ranked sixth, most likely due to his homophobic rant. PHOTOS: Charlie Sheen's Wacky Twit Pics Lifetime telepic The Craigslist Killer followed Liars and Men as the third most-talked about TV event, with the Golden Globe Awards and People's Choice Awards at fourth and fifth, respectively. Craigslist Killer, based on the real-life story of med student/National Honor Society member Philip Markoff who was accused of killing a woman he found on Craigslist, drew 5.4 million viewers in January. On the film side, the four out of the five top topics of the year were genre films based on beloved characters. At the top of the list was Chris Hemsworth's summer blockbuster Thor, followed by the heavily-reported Batman threequel The Dark Knight Rises with Christian Bale, X-Men: First Class, actioner Fast Five and the Seth Rogen superhero turn Green Hornet. Crazy Cases! 18 of Hollywood's Outrageous Entertainment Lawsuits

Disney In terms of the best picture Oscar race, the mid-August release The Help has a lot going for it:our editor recommendsFEINBERG FORECAST: 'The Artist,' 'The Descendants,' 'The Help' Atop Best Pic Field'The Help's' Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer to Present at THR's Women in Entertainment Breakfast'The Help' to Receive Ensemble Award at 15th Annual Hollywood Film Awards (Exclusive) Prestige it is an adaptation of a best-selling book that many people count among their all-time favorites. Gravitas It's a social-conscience movie of the sort that the Academy has always embraced -- one that tackles a difficult subject and promotes a progressive viewpoint. Critical Acclaim It has a very respectable 75% favorability rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Commercial Success It has taken in more money at the box-office than any best picture Oscar winner in eight years and all but eight ever. Personnel Its large ensemble cast is composed of popular and respected actors who have collectively worked with virtually everyone in the business (and friends often vote for friends). High-Profile Supporters Its vocal fan-base includes Oprah Winfrey, whose endorsement may be more valuable than anyone else's in the world. But it also has one big problem. Odd as it may sound: women. Yes, the demographic that is most responsible for turning Kathryn Stockett's novel and Tate Taylor's adaptation of it into cultural phenomena is also the same demographic that could be most responsible for keeping it from winning the best picture Oscar. PHOTOS: How 'The Help' Was Cast Why? Because the Academy, which is overwhelmingly male (the ratio may be as high as two-to-one, according to awards strategists to whom I reached out for insight), may nominate movies that primarily revolve around and/or appeal to females, but it almost never awards them its top prize. There have been a few sporadic exceptions to this rule -- The Broadway Melody (1929), Mrs. Miniver (1942), All About Eve (1950), Gigi (1958), The Sound of Music (1965), Terms of Endearment (1983), Shakespeare in Love (1998), and Chicago (2002). PHOTOS: 'The Help' Stars on THR's Awards Season Roundtable: The Actresses But the vast majority of the time, movies about and/or targeted at women can't overcome the Academy's skewed demographic breakdown. Norma Rae (1979), Working Girl (1988), Thelma and Louise (1991), The Piano (1993), Sense and Sensibility (1995), Erin Brokovich (2000), Moulin Rouge! (2001), The Queen (2006), Juno (2007), The Kids Are All Right (2010), and many others were nominated, but were ultimately just "too soft" for most men in the Academy, to use the words of a female awards strategist. The same obstacles facing The Help may impact the prospects of several other 2011 awards contenders that "skew female," as well, such as Midnight in Paris, The Iron Lady, Young Adult, and, arguably, The Tree of Life. PHOTOS: 10 Biggest Book-to-Big Screen Adaptations of the Last 25 Years The only way to reverse this trend will be to better even out of the demographics of the Academy. The awards strategists with whom I spoke believe that females are represented in numbers equal to or greater than males in several Academy branches -- art direction, makeup artists and hairstylists, and possibly public relations and even acting (in part because women tend to live longer than men). But, for now at least, most branches -- like the overall membership -- still skew heavily male. (British, Danish, Hindi dialogue)Part personal mission, part testimonial and part fund-raiser, "An Outing throughout my Mother's Actions" satisfies disparate agendas for helmer Dina Rosenmeier, a mildly amplified daughter wondering why her humanitarian mother prioritized orphaned Indian children over her offspring. Jessie Rosenmeier, the laudable Danish humanitarian whose amazing achievements the docu tales, is alive and well, charming and incredibly articulate. A: I do not call Walter a "Muppet" since the Muppets, a minimum of within this movie, appear to become a a business that needs some kind of invitation of membership. Quite simply: Simply because you are a super hero, that does not instantly imply that you are an element of the Justice League Of America of America. Q: Do doo p-do-do p-do-do p-do-do p-do-do-doodle do do do-doo do! To celebrate their ten-year anniversary, Gary plans a vacation to La together with his girlfriend, Mary (Can Be). To Mary's slight chagrin, Gary invites Walter, too. Q: Mah mama na mah mah namomp momp ma mo mo mana mo. A: Mickey Rooney. Q: Mahna Mahna? A: Yes, Steve Martin is within 'The Muppets,' kind of. Put the Parallels Between Rachelle Lefervre in Cosmopolis and Robert P Niro in Taxi Driver

Any photo of Rachelle Lefervre is recognized with the Internet, and this week’s brand-new Cosmopolis stills featuring the Twilight heartthrob were a welcome Web treat. But one of the photos struck me as oddly much like a classic image from Taxi Driver, which got me with the parallels between Pattinson’s approaching David Cronenberg-directed project and Martin Scorsese’s famous P Niro vehicle. Is it possible to put the commonalities? I’ll start you off… · Both dramas feature the above mentioned pointed out still from the primary figures pointing a gun for the upper left corner in the frame. (Clearly.) · Both Cosmopolis and Taxi Driver chronicle the lives of two Manhattan-ites who spend almost all their screen time driving around NY City in the vehicle. · Both films’ protagonists need a haircut. This is not merely a tongue-in-mouth area observation. Cosmopolis really concentrates on a 28-year-old billionaire crossing the The The Big Apple searching for a haircut. Taxi Driver features a violent, insomniac Vietnam vet whose extended several hours, proclivity for seedy porn theaters and also the depression keep him in the barbershop. Can you go to whichever other parallels? · Rachelle Lefervre Traverses Manhattan in ‘Cosmopolis’ [THR]

AFM 2011: Ron Howard Reveals Plan to Lure NASCAR-Loving Americans to His Formula One Movie 'Rush' (Q&A)

When Universal Studios slammed the brakes on Ron Howard's ambitious Stephen King adaptation The Dark Tower, the Oscar-winning director switched gears to join the independent auto-racing movie Rush. The film, written by Howard's Frost/Nixon scribe Peter Morgan, centers on the complicated friendship between 1970s Formula One racing rivals Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl of Inglourious Basterds) and James Hunt (Thor star Chris Hemsworth). Universal will release Rush stateside, and Exclusive Media is selling the film worldwide here at AFM. The director spoke with The Hollywood Reporterabout how he plans to make American audiences, which typically side with NASCAR, fall in love with the sport of Formula One.our editor recommends'The Dark Tower' Crumbles as Universal Officially Cancels Ron Howard Project Bryce Dallas Howard, Ron Howard Team for Canon Short FilmImagine Denies 'Dark Tower' Trilogy in Turnaround As Questions MountRon Howard, Brian Grazer Look for New Studio, Financing for 'Dark Tower'Oscar Icons: Ron Howard, Brian Grazer, Akiva Goldsman The Hollywood Reporter: How did you get involved with this project? Ron Howard: We were trying to fast-track Dark Tower, and then, because of issues with the budget and other conditions, we had to put it back a bit. Suddenly, I found myself free. I've known Peter Morgan since we did Frost/Nixon. I knew this was something he was writing and that he'd found interest from independent financiers. I asked if I could read it, and in a whirlwind, maybe five or 10 days, I'd signed to make Rush. STORY: The Painful Death of Hollywood's Producers: No First Class, No Calls Back THR: How much of the project was already in place? Did you have a cast? Howard: There wasn't any cast when I joined. Peter was always very interested in getting Daniel Bruhl to play Lauda, and as soon as I met him, I thought he'd be great for the role. And I'd had a meeting with Chris Hemsworth through the preparation for Dark Tower and thought he'd be very interesting. Then he gave a fantastic audition and just nailed it. We stopped casting right then. THR: Formula One is a huge sport internationally but less so in the U.S. Why will American audiences want to watch a Formula One movie? Howard: Because these are fascinating characters -- ballsy, masculine guys. It was a very dangerous era in racing, and here are two absolute individuals at the height of their powers. It makes for great drama and very exciting action. I wasn't a die-hard Formula One fan before I read Peter's script, but I've been immersing myself in this world. I think the excitement I feel as a fresh convert may be infectious. STORY: The State of the Studio Deals: Who's Doing What Where THR: What sort of research are you doing? Howard: I'm going to try to do what I did with firefighting in Backdraft, the space capsule in Apollo 13 or the boxing ring in Cinderella Man. None of those were worlds I knew before I made those movies. But I got fascinated, first by the characters, then with their world. Then I tried to merge the two. I've been spending a lot of time around Formula One tracks and talking to people connected to the sport. I've met Niki Lauda a few times. I sat with him during the race at Silverstone Circuit [in England], and his commentary was so riveting I didn't even dare get up to go to the bathroom! Luckily, Formula One has been covered in such detail in the last 35 to 40 years with numerous documentaries, most recently with Senna, which I just today finished watching for the seventh time. STORY: 'The Dark Tower' Crumbles as Universal Officially Cancels Ron Howard Project THR: What does your shooting schedule look like? Howard: We get going in February, and if everything goes right, we will deliver the film for early winter. But it's a very complicated film. This isn't like any film I've done before, but I think we can offer audiences a rare vantage point. I think we can get the camera into places it hasn't been before -- right in the middle, in the guts of the race -- and offer the audience a real experience of what these guys do. THR: Is this model -- independently financing a film and then getting a studio to distribute -- one you could see using for your own production company, Imagine? Howard: Sure. Listen, I'm involved in this way largely because Peter, who's also a producer on the project, had put it together that way. But we have the resources we need to fully realize this movie, so I'm very excited. STORY: Brian Grazer: Stephen King's 'The Dark Tower' Still a Go at HBO THR: What's the future of Dark Tower? Howard: We are continuing to work on the script to find ways to make the budget more manageable and still deliver the work in a way that the project deserves. We were always racing and fast-tracking the project, so I always wince when I see something written about it and there's a release date in there. These kinds of projects often take years to come together in the right ways. But I am in love with the material, and the minute it can come together in the right way, I am fully committed to it. Rush was kind of like a gift. I love stories that center on fascinating characters, and here you have psychologically complex, rare human beings, and they are also young and cool -- and it's all in this unbelievably glamorous, sexy period in the mid-'70s. And yet, in terms of emotion and the heartbeat of the story, I think they will be very relatable. If you don't know anything about Formula One, I'm going to present it in such a way that you'll very likely fall in love with it. If you do know Formula One, I'm going to be very respectful and deliver a film you'll love, too. Related Topics AFM Chris Hemsworth Ron Howard AFM 2011 Stephen King

Bad Movies We Love: Mamma Mia!

Mamma Mia! is a celebrated American film where Meryl Streep tries to convince you she’s brain-damaged for 108 minutes. She has no guess as to who birthed her blonde, blue-eyed, ABBA-squawking daughter, but she’ll storm about a sunny Grecian isle until we all agree to forget she’s doing this for an obese stack of cash. What a Swedish fishy musical this is! It gives Stockholm Syndrome to thinking people. Let’s watch it 30 times, channel Agnetha and Anni-Frid using ethereal harmonies and beige lipstick, and recount the five greatest musical numbers in this insane, aquamarine spectacle of light, sound and sheer embarrassment. I nearly forgot: The youthful star of Mamma Mia is Amanda Seyfried, who leads this week’s new release In Time with a “futuristic look” (code for “Bridget Fonda haircut”). That movie looks unbearable, but Seyfried makes Mamma Mia a pleasure using her Tila Tequila-shaped head and physique. She’s supported by an exhausted cast of veterans wind-burnt by time and sitcom pilots. Together they’re a mysteriously savory blend, and they create a movie that is pretty much Glee for Adderall addicts, or Kidz Bop for chocolate-crazed, Fabio-literate adults. The ridiculous paternity narrative is irrelevant — I’m hopped up on pure ABBA euphoria after re-watching Mamma Mia!, and here are the five covers worth revisiting on this droopy Wednesday. 5. Christine Baranski’s husky, libidinous “Does Your Mother Know” Christine Baranski has graced the pages of Bad Movies We Love before, but here she comes into her own as a barky she-wolf with a legendary mandible. In the hard-veined hands of Baranski, ABBA’s “Does Your Mother Know” bursts with powerful horniness. Watch as this goody-goody Good Wife player juts and thrusts with the chutzpah of a much older raptor. 4. Amanda Seyfried and Dominic Cooper’s “Lay All Your Love on Me” “LAYLOM” is ABBA’s secretly nastiest jam, and the most unsettling. The chrous’s druid incantation doubles as a sex-slave shanty, and these two oiled-up lovers chirp it with gusto. Well, Seyfried does. Dominic Cooper hoots like a nervous chorus boy trying to impress his sophomore girlfriend, but Seyfried’s Nordic glee gives way to sexy bliss. Don’t go wasting your emotions on him, Amanda! 3. Julie Walters’ utterly irrelevant “Take a Chance on Me” Well after Mamma Mia! has given up on plot and sense, Julie Walters gallops up on a table and begs a dude to love her. This is just like life for many of us. ABBA’s entrancing, rolling beat is not as hypnotic when it’s shoehorned into this already-crammed runtime, but Julie’s confused rendition is unforgettable, for better or for worse. 2. Meryl Streep spends her “Money, Money, Money” on singing lessons and this year’s overalls. “Money, Money, Money” belongs in My Fair Lady or another Lerner & Loewe jamboree, not an ABBA musical full of evocative disco mood pieces. As the movie kicks off, Meryl charges around her island estate like Ricardo Montalban and gripes about how poor she is. This is another farfetched idea, in case you’re keeping track. Please bear witness as Sophie’s Choice’s Polish pixie has to choose between dignity and insanity while a tantalizing Swedish beat plays the odious kommandant in charge of her fate. Spoiler: The Europop wins. Throw your dignity in the back of a train car and watch as your inhibitions go chug-chug-chugging away! 1. Pierce Brosnan’s so-so-so-so-so-so-so-aptly titled “S.O.S.” Daniel Craig revived James Bond’s sexuality even though we didn’t know it had withered away long ago. Who ruined 007’s naughty streak, you ask? Hint: Here, Pierce Brosnan yelps the lyrics to “S.O.S.,” and it seems like his last hit of Viagra is on the line. Remington Steele is just a bizarre choice for a singing part in any film, and when Brosnan’s belting power notes like a balladeer, it’s hard to watch. Hell, it’s hard to live. I won’t burden you with the video — the audio track of his weirdly accented, gurgly rendition is enough to give you license to kill yourself. Because your landlocked, deprived existence can’t get better than this. Awful. And incredible. Follow Louis Virtel on Twitter. Follow Movieline on Twitter.

Early pop for 'Ghost'

"Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol" will integrate the Coke Zero brand while the soda company launches a promo effort featuring the film. "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol" will integrate the Coke Zero brand while the soda company launches a promo effort featuring the film. The Coca-Cola Co. has accepted the mission to back Paramount's "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol" and is now rolling out a Coke Zero campaign for the fourth installment of the Tom Cruise spy franchise bowing in December.Such an early launch is unusual, given that most promo partners don't target consumers until a month before a film's release. But Coke wanted to get ahead of the busy holiday season, which will find marketers bombarding consumers with ads. The longer promo window will enable Par to generate buzz for the actioner 2 moonths before it hits theaters.Coke's campaign won't revolve around Cruise's Ethan Hunt character, however. Instead, the company has chosen Dubai's Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest skyscraper, which is featured prominently in the actioner. One image puts the tower in the middle of a Coke Zero bottle. TV spots will use key scenes from the film, namely Cruise jumping from the Burj Khalifa, counting down to "Zero.""We're partnering with this franchise and not necessarily the actor," Chip York, worldwide entertainment marketing director for the Coca-Cola Co., told Variety. At the same time, Dubai "is this hip new place people are talking about and is a character in the film," York said. Centering on the locale and not the character gave Coke the freedom to design its own images and the leeway to continue with the series if Cruise chooses not to stay with the "Mission: Impossible" franchise down the road. The company is building an extensive global campaign around Coke Zero with TV, in-theater, billboards, radio, retail and social media marketing support already out in some territories, including Japan, Greece and Switzerland. The "Mission: Impossible" logo will be plastered on more than 100 million items of Coke Zero packaging, including cases, cans and bottles. Key markets include the U.S., Japan, Europe, Latin America and the Middle East. In total, the promo effort is launching in more than 30 markets through December. Film bows domestically on Dec. 21 (it's on Imax screens Dec. 16).Since 2008, Coke has chosen one tentpole each year around which to launch a major campaign; James Bond pic "Quantum of Solace," "Avatar" and "Tron: Legacy" were its most recent choices. The fourth "M:I" is the first of the action series that Coke has put its marketing muscle behind."We have seen a lot of success with these big tentpole films around the world," York said. "This is our big bet this year."Coke sparked to "Mission: Impossible" because the franchise appeals to males -- Coke Zero's target -- but also because it happens to mesh well with Coke Zero's current "Make it possible" advertising tagline and the brand's attributes of being "masculine, confident and bold," York said. "There was an obvious linkage there.""The Mission: Impossible franchise and Coke Zero brand share an audience of fans who appreciate excitement and risk-taking, and this partnership creates a platform to build a unique engagement with consumers before the film's release," said LeeAnne Stables, exec VP of worldwide marketing partnerships for Paramount Pictures. All marketing materials also feature a custom "M:I" logo, rather than heavily push the "Ghost Protocol" moniker, to better associate Coke Zero with the overall "Mission: Impossible" series."Obviously there will be an ambitious effort to move the franchise forward, and we wanted to do something were we can carry on and be a part of it in the future," York said.Retail displays will use the franchise's iconic fuse. The "M:I" tie-in will also appear on popcorn bags and branded cups in movie theaters. And fans will be able to complete missions through an online game to attain agent-level access to exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, scenes, images and interviews.A separate social game from SCVNGR will use a mobile phone app to drive users into participating movie theaters and convenience stores across the U.S. to win rewards such as pre-screenings, premiere tickets and Coke Zero products.Coke will monitor the popularity of the game to consider using the app for other film promos in the future, York said.In addition to Cruise, "Mission: Impossible -- Ghost Protocol" stars Jeremy Renner, Simon Pegg, Paula Patton, Michael Nyqvist, Vladimir Mashkov, Josh Holloway, Anil Kapoor and Lea Seydoux. Brad Bird (Pixar's "The Incredibles") directs from a script by Josh Appelbaum & Andre Nemec and Christopher McQuarrie. J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk and Cruise produce. "As we get closer to the release of the film we will be rolling out additional elements of the film that will no doubt excite fans of the franchise and fans of the brand," York said.In return for its marketing support, Coke Zero will appear in the film, through its bottles and logo on umbrellas during cafe scenes, billboards in the background of shots and Coke Zero flags in Dubai. But the presence is dependent upon director Brad Bird's final cut."The primary focus isn't necessarily brand integration but how to drive (sales) volume," York said.
